Relative sea level over the last 2100 years, reconstructed by Kemp et al. (2011) using analysis of microfossils in sediment from salt marshes in North Carolina. Red indicates the uncertainty in the reconstructions. Sea level, and the rate of sea level rise, have increased substantially over the last century.
