Skeptical Science New Research for Week #1 2023

In Conservation Biology, snapshots of two books that will probably launch a lot of objections, one by Vaclav Smil and the other yet more Bill Gates. Two doses of carbon budget realism review author Vojtech Novotny sums them up: "Sober assessments of our options for reducing carbon emissions in the real world. They are not optimistic reads."  Smil frames our future as a possibility built only with old habits, while  Gates places great faith in technology we don't have. Neither is a comforting arrow pointing to success.

Robbin Bastiaansen et al. confidently assert a significant claim and go to a great deal of trouble to explain their reasoning in Climate response and sensitivity: time scales and late tipping points. A real appreciation will take a good deal of effort but--hazily— a system can be "preconditioned" with subtle properties that cause climate sensitivity to be "spring loaded" with delay, such that response may appear to be following expectations until late in the game. It would be surprising if this paper didn't attract attention, scrutiny, discussion.

Not every roadblock has a NIMBY manning it and even friction of the  sensiible type affecting renewable energy imposes costs of various kinds. Delafield & collaborators show how to work the accounting when environmental or food production requirements thwart deployment in The Financial and Environmental Consequences of Renewable Energy Exclusion Zones.

Major contributors to climate change are unleashing powerful knockon effects leading to disruptions in human affairs at scale. A pair of papers reduces excuses for ignoring symptoms and responsibilities. In their review Measuring the effect of climate change on migration flows: Limitations of existing data and analytical frameworks Marc Helbling & crew do what the title advertises and then seek to identify systematic gaps in our understanding, with an eye to becoming better informed. Meanwhile, Migration and climate change – the role of social protection by Silchenko & Murray reviews prior work on "social protection" as a means of making climate change a bit less jolting to human populations, Via the authors: "Social protection can be described as a set of policies and programs designed to reduce poverty and vulnerability by providing cash or consumption transfers."  This could of plausibly be rephrased as "taking responsibility for one's externa costs."

Jianxiong Hu and a large team of authors appear to have identifed a strong connection in Temperature-related mortality in China from specific injury. From the abstract: "The results show that a 0.50% (95% confident interval (CI): 0.13%–0.88%) increase of injury mortality risk for each 1 °C rise in daily temperature, with higher risk for intentional injury (1.13%, 0.55%–1.71%) than that for unintentional injury (0.40%, 0.04%–0.77%)." The authors illustrate that this translates into fairly large excess mortality in a large population. Hu et al. list some limitations of their analysis, including that their figures do not include excess mortality due to climate-related natural disasters.

The Impact of Climate Change on Risk and Return in Indian Agriculture. A line from the discussion sounds very dry but is freighted with implications: "Across our several different modelling approaches, one robust finding has been a sharp predicted decline in the first moment of this distribution. This implies potentially substantial uninsurable losses from the changing climate, whether or not insurance markets are well-developed." For the rest of us, Costa and coauthors are describing an untenable situation affecting enormous numbers of people. See papers on migration, above.

With all that, surely time for some good news. Here it is: Fucoid brown algae inject fucoidan carbon into the ocean. Via scrupulous experimentation authors Buck-Wiese et al. may have resolved an important unknown factor in biological carbon sinks by their reaching the concluson "Fucoidan can accumulate in particles and could, through the biological carbon pump, reach the deep ocean where carbon is sequestered. While acknowledging the limited scale of our experiment, we conclude that dissolved fucoidan secretion is likely an overlooked contribution of brown algae to carbon dioxide removal." Given the ubiquitous nature of the organims under discussion this could be a lot of carbon, a fairly sizable line item in a complicated budget and good to quantify.

Climate change deniers find this kind of improvement to be catnip, although they're always disapponted. Katherine Dooley et al. take a long hard look at the sole remaining European historical 19th century or earlier high temperature record and find it wanting. Applying the same analytical methods to another possible candidate results in the same outcome, leaving no such records earlier than te late 20th century. The authors show their work in Reassessing long-standing meteorological records: an example using the national hottest day in Ireland.

New LiDAR-Based Elevation Model Shows Greatest Increase in Global Coastal Exposure to Flooding to Be Caused by Early-Stage Sea-Level Rise by Ronald Vernimmen Aljosja Hooijer surfaces something that should ideally capture a lot of attention: "Radar-based land elevation models applied to date suggest that the increase of area below mean sea level, that is potentially exposed to permanent flooding, will accelerate as SLR proceeds, being relatively limited initially. However, applying new and more accurate satellite LiDAR elevation data we find the opposite pattern, with the fastest increase in the area of exposed land occurring in the early stages of SLR. In one-third of countries most of this increase will be caused by the first meter of SLR and in nearly all within the first 2 m." Locally and with respect to the Skeptical Science mission, our remark is that digging in heels and trying avoid reality is only going to make things worse.

Articles/Reports from Agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations Addressing Aspects of Climate Change

Counting The Cost 2022. A year of climate breakdown, Christian Aid

The 10 most financially costly disaster-related events in 2022 all had an impact of $3 billion or more. Most of these estimates are based only on insured losses, meaning the true financial costs are likely to be even higher, while the human costs are often uncounted.

National Preparedness Report, Federal Emergency Management Agency

The authors summarize the progress made toward building and sustaining the capabilities needed to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from the threats and hazards that pose the greatest risk to the nation and describes the major gaps in emergency management preparedness. This annual report offers practical insights into preparedness to support decisions about program priorities, resource allocations, and actions for increasing whole community resilience.

Obtaining articles without journal subscriptions

We know it's frustrating that many articles we cite here are not free to read. One-off paid access fees are generally astronomically priced, suitable for such as "On a Heuristic Point of View Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light but not as a gamble on unknowns. With a median world income of US$ 9,373, for most of us US$ 42 is significant money to wager on an article's relevance and importance.

How is New Research assembled?

Most articles appearing here are found via  RSS feeds from journal publishers, filtered by search terms to produce raw output for assessment of relevance.

Relevant articles are then queried against the Unpaywall database, to identify open access articles and expose useful metadata for articles appearing in the database.

The objective of New Research isn't to cast a tinge on scientific results, to color readers' impressions. Hence candidate articles are assessed via two metrics only:

The section "Informed opinion, nudges & major initiatives" includes some items that are not scientific research per se but fall instead into the category of "perspectives," observations of implications of research findings, areas needing attention, etc.
